Red Flags When Hiring an HVAC Contractor

The HVAC industry, like any service trade, has companies that prioritize the sale over the customer. These are the warning signs.

The diagnosis takes less than five minutes. A real diagnostic requires time — measuring refrigerant levels, checking electrical components, evaluating airflow. A technician who tells you what's wrong before they've done any actual testing hasn't diagnosed anything.

Pressure to decide immediately. Legitimate problems don't expire in the next 30 minutes. Any contractor who uses urgency as a sales tactic is using a tactic, not giving you honest advice.

No written estimate. If a contractor won't put the price in writing before starting work, don't authorize the work. This protects you.

The price changes after work begins. A reputable contractor will tell you if something unexpected is discovered and give you a revised written estimate before proceeding. Surprise charges at the end of a job are unprofessional.

Unusually low prices on refrigerant. Refrigerant pricing is relatively consistent within the market. A price that seems too good to be true often involves recharge without a leak check — meaning the refrigerant will escape again, and you'll be called back for another charge.

No license or insurance when asked. Unlicensed work can void your equipment warranty and creates liability risk for your home. There is no acceptable reason for a contractor to be unable to show proof of licensure.

We hold ourselves to a standard we'd be comfortable being judged by. If something doesn't sit right in your interaction with any contractor — including us — ask the question out loud. A trustworthy company will answer it directly.
