Repair and replacement are two different decisions, and confusing them is how homeowners end up either spending too much keeping an old system alive or replacing something prematurely. Here is what actually matters.
Age of the system. Most air conditioning units have a reliable service life of 15 to 20 years when properly maintained. If your system is approaching or past that range, replacement deserves serious consideration. Not because it will fail tomorrow, but because its efficiency has likely declined significantly and the cost of major repairs on aging equipment rarely makes financial sense.
Frequent repairs. One repair a year is normal. Two or three repairs in a single season is a pattern. When you find yourself calling for service regularly, the system is telling you something. Add up what you have spent in the past two or three years and compare that to what a new, efficient system would cost. The math often tells the story.
Uneven temperatures throughout your home. If one room is always too hot and another too cold, it can point to an undersized system, failing components, or ductwork issues. A technician needs to evaluate which.
Energy bills that keep rising. Efficiency degrades over time. An older system working harder to deliver the same comfort will show up on your electric bill every month.
R-22 refrigerant. If your system still uses R-22, it is worth knowing that this refrigerant has been phased out by federal regulation. It is still available but increasingly expensive. A system that depends on it is already running on borrowed time.
