What to Do When Your HVAC System Fails Unexpectedly

The first thing to do is resist panic. Most system failures, even in the peak of a Texas summer, are diagnosable and repairable — and the more clearly you can describe what happened, the faster a technician can help you.

Check the basics first. Before calling anyone, verify that your thermostat is set correctly and that the circuit breaker for your HVAC system hasn't tripped. Also check that the filter isn't so clogged it's caused the system to shut down on safety lockout. These are quick checks that can save a service call.

Check the condensate drain. Many modern systems have a safety float switch in the condensate drain pan. If the drain is clogged, water backs up, the float switch trips, and the system shuts off. A clogged drain is a common cause of a system that simply stops working with no other obvious reason.

If the system won't come back on, call a professional. Trying to troubleshoot beyond the basics yourself risks making the problem worse or voiding a warranty.
