Why Is My AC Not Cooling Properly?

A system that runs but doesn't cool is one of the most frustrating things a homeowner deals with — especially in a Texas summer. The cause is rarely obvious, and it almost always requires a trained eye. That said, here are the most common culprits.

Dirty air filter. This is the first thing to check and the one most often overlooked. A clogged filter restricts airflow so severely that even a perfectly functioning system can't cool your home. Check your filter before you call anyone.

Low refrigerant. Refrigerant is what your system uses to absorb heat from your home's air. When it's low — typically due to a leak — the system loses its ability to cool effectively. This requires a licensed technician to diagnose and repair. Adding refrigerant without finding and fixing the leak is a temporary fix at best.

Dirty condenser coils. The outdoor unit releases the heat absorbed from inside your home. When the condenser coils are coated in dirt and debris — which happens over time, especially if the unit is surrounded by landscaping — the system can't reject heat efficiently. Cooling capacity drops noticeably.

A failing compressor. The compressor is the heart of the cooling system. When it begins to fail, cooling becomes inconsistent or insufficient. This is a significant repair and, depending on the age of the system, sometimes the trigger for a replacement conversation.

Undersized equipment. If your system has never cooled your home adequately, it may have been incorrectly sized from the beginning. This requires a load calculation to determine the right capacity for your home's square footage, insulation, and layout.
