Why Is My HVAC System Making Noise?

Your system communicates through sound. A well-functioning system runs with a consistent, quiet hum. When something else starts — banging, rattling, screeching, clicking — something has changed, and it's worth paying attention.

Banging or clanking. Usually points to a loose or broken component inside the indoor unit — often a blower wheel or motor mount that has worked loose. This kind of noise should be investigated promptly. Loose parts don't get better on their own.

Screeching or squealing. This is often a bearing in the blower motor beginning to fail, or a belt issue in older systems. It's the system asking for attention before the component fails entirely.

Clicking at startup or shutdown. A single click when the system turns on and off is normal — that's the relay. Repeated clicking during operation is different. It can indicate a failing relay or control board, or a problem with ignition in a furnace.

Rattling. Can be something as simple as a loose panel or debris inside the outdoor unit. Can also be a loose component in the ductwork or blower assembly. Worth investigating.

High-pitched hissing. In a cooling system, this can sometimes indicate a refrigerant leak — refrigerant escaping under pressure produces a distinct sound. This requires immediate professional attention.

None of these are sounds to ignore. The longer a mechanical problem goes unaddressed, the more likely it is to become a larger one. Call us at (817) 502-2178 and describe what you're hearing — we can often help narrow it down before a technician arrives.
